Notable Sites in Visit Paestum, Italy

Paestum is in southern Italy, in the Campania region, and Battipaglia and Agropoli are the cities closest to it. Originally a Greek colony, it became part of the Roman empire in about 300 CE. Though it benefited from the wealth of its residents for about 800 subsequent years, it began to decline around the 1100s. Archaeologists rediscovered it during the 18th century when excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum brought attention to it.

Paestum features three temples, two to Hera, and the third to Athena, built between 550 and 460 BCE, with the second temple to Hera, often called the Temple of Neptune, being the most well-preserved. These temples also served as command centers and areas for treating wounded allied soldiers during 1943’s Operation Avalanche, when American troops landed at Salerno Beach and endured a nine-day siege by Italian forces. Due to this varied history and well-preserved architecture, UNESCO named Paestum a World Heritage Site in 1998.
