Paestum is in southern Italy, in the Campania region, and Battipaglia and Agropoli are the cities closest to it. Originally a Greek colony, it became part of the Roman empire in about 300 CE. Though it benefited from the wealth of its residents for about 800 subsequent years, it began to decline around the 1100s. Archaeologists rediscovered it during the 18th century when excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum brought attention to it.
